Student Activities: Welcome to North Portland!
Because you probably spend a large portion of your time at the University, you might want to familiarize yourself with the neighborhoods around campus. On this page you will find an introduction to the UP area as well as lists of various shops, restaurants, resources, and attractions listed by neighborhood.* If you feel the need to orient yourself relative to campus, you can get an idea of location by viewing the

UP is situated in the sector of Portland known as North Portland. This area technically includes a large area. The neighborhoods immediately surrounding UP are all situated on the Peninsula, so named because of the geographic land formation produced by the Willamette and Columbia Rivers, which meet at the north-western tip of the North Portland Peninsula.
The peninsula neighborhoods closest to UP are as follows:
| University Park | The residential neighborhood immediately surrouding campus. Boundaries are Lombard, Chatauqua, Willamette, and the river. |
| St. Johns | A primarily residential area West of campus, it also includes a charming "downtown" along Lombard Street. |
| Overlook | Also known as Swan Island, it includes the industrial area below the Bluff as well as the residential area south of Ainsworth St. |
| Kenton | A primarily residential area North-West of campus, it also includes a lovely "downtown" area along Denver Avenue. |
| Portsmouth | The residential area north of Lombard Street. |
| Cathedral Park | The area on the south (river-side) of Willamette Blvd, West of Ida Avenue. Includes the beautiful Cathedral City Park beneath the St. John's Bridge. |
| Arbor Lodge | The residential area located between Lombard Street, Ainsworth Street, and I-5. |
