At the same time, there are some cautionary lessons that have emerged from participating in social networks. We strongly advise you to use discretion when posting personal information on the Internet:
- Create a safe password and check your privacy settings and make sure they are at a level you are comfortable with.
- Know that future employers, graduate schools, and campus departments and organizations may use information they gather from online communities as they are making decisions.
- Information you post online may continue to stay on the Internet even after you erase or delete that information from your profile, photo album or blog.
- Avoid posting phone numbers and residential address information and any specific information about your whereabouts. Be vague about this information, perhaps just city and state.
- Don’t judge a person by their profile! Some people choose to be artificial or insincere about certain information. If your new roommate’s favorite movie is one that you can’t stand, be sure to take time to learn more about your similarities and differences in preferences by personal contact. Roommate changes will not be granted on the basis of perceptions gleaned from online social networks.
- Spending too much time online can interfere with your academic progress. Internet addiction is a real affliction.
