Admissions: Taylor Spooner
Favorite core class?Easily my favorite core class has been Fine Arts which I took in Salzburg, Austria! I will never forget the seven weeks I spent studying abroad in Salzburg during the summer between my sophomore and junior year and during those seven weeks I took Fine Arts. Unlike taking Fine Arts in Portland, Fine Arts in Salzburg meant going to the house that Mozart was born in and visiting some of the most stunning cathedrals and architecture I have ever seen. My favorite assignment from that class was writing a short essay explaining, using learned vocabulary, the favorite place we traveled to that summer.
Favorite professor and why?I cannot pick just one UP professor so I will pick two: Dr. Craig Swinyard in the math department and Dr. Tanya Crenshaw in the Computer Science department. Dr. Swinyard has been a great mentor and friend of mine. I actually had to stop going into his office for a while when I was taking one of his classes because instead of getting homework done, we would get distracted telling stories, swapping jokes, or discussing the next Blazers game. Dr. Crenshaw is another professor that everyone needs to experience at least once, or in my case three times. No other person on this campus will work as hard as she does for her students. Near the end of my junior year, I went into her office on the brink of an anxiety attack from school, trying to find an internship, and piecing my life together. Dr. Crenshaw sat down with me for almost two hours just talking things out. She helped me get my summer internship and has gone beyond the responsibilities of a teacher time and time again for me.
Favorite Portland landmark?I am not really sure what is meant by Portland landmark... If you ask me, the Moda Center (once named the Rose Garden) is a beautiful Portland landmark because the Portland Trail Blazers play there! Also, food might not seem like a landmark, but once you have had the fried chicken, mashed potatoes and Mac N' Cheese at Screen Door, you will consider that place an unforgettable Portland landmark.
Hidden talent?Sadly, I am pretty untalented. I can touch my nose with my tongue but I don't know if you would call that a talent, mostly just weird.
Favorite Pilots After Dark event?Every karaoke night ever. Boom!
Why did you decide to enroll at University of Portland?Whenever you come home after a long time away, a sense of comfort and belonging overpowers you; that was the feeling that I got when I stepped foot on UP’s campus. From the person that directed us to Waldschmidt Hall, to our tour guide, to every passing student, there was a sense of community that radiated from everyone on UP’s campus that made picking my college an easy decision.
