Academic Advising: Philosophy of Advising
Advising at the University of Portland supports the University’s mission of developing the whole person. While classroom instruction focuses on meeting a more specific set of learning objectives, faculty advisors take a broader interest in the student’s educational program, helping the student to make the most of his or her college experience. The advising relationship need not be limited to a student’s officially assigned advisor. Members of the faculty consider advising and mentoring students to be an integral part of their responsibilities as educators.
Advisors work to develop ongoing working relationships with their advisees based on mutual respect, in order to support students as they advance through their academic programs. In keeping with the University’s respect for all students as individuals, faculty advisors at the University of Portland help students to recognize their full potential and encourage them to strive for more than they had envisioned.
