Army ROTC: Extracurricular Activities
The Ranger Challenge
Another opportunity available through the Army ROTC program is the Ranger Challenge, the Army’s varsity sport. This sport provides you with tough mental and physical training. The competition consists of weapons disassembly/assembly, rope-bridge building, a grenade assault course, an army physical fitness test, and a 10 mile road march. You do not need to be in the Army ROTC program in order to participate in this activity. All University of Portland students are eligible to compete.Color Guard
The University of Portland Army ROTC Color Guard participates with the University of Portland Air Force ROTC Color Guard in a variety of university and civic functions. Presentation of our Nations Flags often takes place at University of Portland Sporting Events, Portland State Sporting Events and Portland Trailblazer games.Advanced Special Skills Qualification Training
Advanced Course students and select Basic Course students may participate in selected Army training schools: Airborne, Air Assault, Northern Warfare, and Cadet Troop Leadership Training.Field Training
Even if you choose not to participate in the Ranger Challenge, you will have plenty of physical training. In Army Field Training you will practice land navigation, small unit tactics, and patrolling. Adventure training, such as white water rafting and downhill skiing, is often available.
