Name: Aly Ferris
Senior
Major
: I’m double majoring in English and Secondary Education
Hometown
: North Plains, OR…it’s the town that you probably stopped to get gas in on your way to the coast.
Activities : I was on UP’s crew team for a few semesters during my first few years here, I’m a mentor with Big Brothers/Big Sisters, I worked on The Beacon for a year, I’ve participated in NUCL and Bridge Builders, I went to Salzburg with UP this past summer and then did some backpacking around Europe, I currently work in admissions answering phones and occasionally giving tours, and starting this year I’m student teaching!
Favorite Professor : Dr. Larson for English and Drs. Christen and Eifler for education. Not only do they force you to think critically about everything you thought you knew, but they always seemed to know my potential and hold me to it. Harder to slack off, but definitely worth it in the long run.
Favorite Class : Dr. Baasten’s marriage class. I took it in Salzburg this past summer and absolutely loved both the professor and the class. We learned all about why so many marriages fail, and then at the end of the class (just when we’d lost all hope for love, marriage, and romance) why some of them actually DO work.
Favorite Commons Meal : Mongolian Thursdays! Chicken-wrap Tuesdays! Burger Wednesdays! Grilled cheese and chowder Fridays! And any time breakfast was served. I really loved (and dearly miss) eating at the Commons.
Why I Chose UP : I didn’t want to go too far away from home, but at the same time I wanted to go somewhere where I could carve out my own space. I was torn between University of Portland and Willamette University but got more financial aid from UP. Now I honestly cannot imagine my life anywhere else.
Favorite Thing About UP : The people that I’ve met here. It’s cliché, but without having come to UP and without having met them, I would not be the person I am today (a person who, quite frankly, I am growing rather fond of.)
Advice for Prospective Students : Enjoy your senior year and don’t stress out too much about finding the right college. The secret to being happy in college is wanting to be happy—life is what you make of it! (And take advantage of any and all free stuff that comes your way during the application process—you’ll learn to love those free t-shirts and meal tickets.)
