One of the many choices that you will have to make during your time at the University of Portland is to declare a major. Research indicates that the majority of college students change their major at least once during their college career and many change their major several times.
The Office of Career Services offers books and resources to help you choose the major and career path that is right for you. Call to schedule an appointment with one of the professional staff members in order to get started in making a major decision.
Internships are a great way to explore careers and gain valuable work experience. Internships provide an opportunity to learn about industries and work environments as well as develop skills and beneficial relationships for future employment. Participating in internships will give you an edge when competing for full-time career opportunities.
The Office of Career Services maintains a database of over 400 local and national internship opportunities, located at the UP Career Connections. To learn more about internship opportunities and how you can receive credit for your internship, schedule an appointment with a professional staff member.
We have an exclusive collection of books on graduate schools, writing personal statements, getting letters of recommendation, and graduate school interviews in our resource center. We also suggest consulting with your adviser for advice and information about graduate studies.
The job search process requires a great deal of planning, persistence, and hard work. The first step in the job search process is to conduct a self-assessment while clarifying your values, skills, and interests. Once you know yourself you can explore your options and choose a direction. After you determine a direction you must actively participate in the job search by conducting informational interviews, attending career fairs, meeting with potential employers, writing resumes and cover letters, practicing interviewing and landing a meaningful career. To help you get started, use our list of Useful Job Search Websites. It also is a good idea to schedule an appointment with a professional staff member to help guide you through the process.
