Franz Center: Leadership Mentors
The Franz Center offers a mentorship program that occurs throughout the school year. Mentors are members of the Greater Portland community that provide 30- minute appointments for students with venture plan related questions in their area of expertise. Sister Adele Marie Altenhofen
Chris Corrado '82
Sister Adele Marie Altenhofen is president of the Sisters of St. Mary of Oregon (SSMO) Ministries Corporation. She joined the Sisters of St. Mary of Oregon in 1982 after completing her undergraduate studies in mathematics and Spanish at the University of Portland, earning maxima cum laude honors, while representing the University of Portland on the basketball court. Sister Adele Marie went on to earn master’s degrees in teaching and educational administration. She ministered as an educator in Spokane, Washington, and in Stayton and Beaverton, Oregon. She served as a school administrator in Beaverton and Astoria, Oregon. As president, Sister Adele Marie leads and oversees all management, fiscal, programmatic, and planning activities of the SSMO Ministries Corporation in a manner consistent with the Sisters’ charism, mission, vision, and values.
Richard Birkel, Ph.D.
Richard Birkel, Ph.D., M.P.A. has been a public health activist, researcher and non-profit leader for more than thirty years. He is recognized as a national expert, advocate and media spokesperson on a variety of public health issues in aging, mental health, chronic illness and disability and family caregiving. Birkel is known as an innovative and dynamic leader of major healthcare organizations and associations. Prior to becoming Executive Director of Catholic Charities, Oregon, he served as Senior Vice President for Health at the National Council on Aging in Washington, DC. where he led efforts to integrate the work of primary health care providers with community service organizations to create "Health Neighborhoods". Prior to that he served as chief executive of the Rosalynn Carter Institute on Caregiving, the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), President of the Joseph P. Kennedy Institute for Developmental Disabilities in Washington, DC. under Cardinal James Hickey, and was a founding member and Secretary/ Treasurer of the Geriatric Mental Health Foundation.
Leo L. Clarke
Axia Financial is a mortgage lender with 45 offices in nine western states, and a Principal of TechRisk. Law, a cyber-risk management advisor. Over the last four decades, Leo has served as General Counsel of regional banks and practiced in six jurisdictions, representing clients ranging from multinational banks and insurance companies to family-owned shipbuilders and municipal labor unions. He has been counsel of record in lawsuits in twelve states, taught at five law schools, and is an internationally recognized expert on technology risk management and cybercrime. Leo has published over thirty articles on topics ranging from Catholic social teaching to constitutional law and cyberwar, and he has lectured at conferences in locations as diverse as New York, Dubai, Estonia, and Green Bay. He is a member of the New York and Washington Bars and graduated with honors from Stanford University and UCLA Law School.
Wendy Collie is President and CEO of the 23-store grocer New Seasons Market. New Seasons operates two banners: New Seasons Market and New Leaf Community Markets. Both grocery companies are certified as B-Corporations which use the power of business to solve social and environmental problems, while giving back to their communities and neighborhoods and strengthening the regional food shed. Before New Seasons, Wendy was President of Consumer Businesses for Knowledge Universe, the largest privately held early childhood educator. Prior to that, Wendy served in various leadership roles at Starbucks Coffee Company for 18 years, both domestically and internationally, most recently serving as Senior Vice President and General Manager for Starbucks U.S. Licensed Stores and Seattle’s Best Coffee Co. For much of her life, Wendy has been a committed volunteer––helping people chart a path to their own success and happiness. In addition to serving on the Board of New Seasons Market, she is on the Board of The Greenleaf Institute, an international non- profit focused on helping social purpose organizations develop leadership skills and opportunities. And, she is a Board Member of the Oregon Business Association (OBA), a statewide business leadership group focused on ensuring Oregon’s continued economic success.
Chris Corrado '82
Chris Corrado is president and CEO of Environments, which he started with partners in 1987 under the name Corporate Environments. Currently the sole owner with 25 employees, Corrado’s company is partnered with the leading sustainable, modular furniture and architectural products manufacturer’s in the industry and has set the stage for continued aggressive growth. As the key distribution partner for Knoll and DIRTT in Oregon and SW Washington, Environments is responding to a strong demand for sustainably built and furnished interiors and the products and materials that address that end. For three years in a row, Environments was named one of the Top 100 Green Companies to Work for in Oregon. Corrado serves on a number of boards including Catholic Charities of Oregon, Providence St Vincent’s Medical Foundation, Mt Angel Abbey Foundation and is an advisor to the Dean of the Pamplin School of Business at the University of Portland.
In 2002, Cathy joined Goodwill Industries of the Columbia Willamette as a Regional Manager. With over 30 years of business leadership, including multi-site retail management, Cathy has played an integral role in the successful opening and operation of new retail stores, boutiques and Vocational Services programs. As Director of Operations and Marketing Services, Cathy oversees 44 Retail Stores, 6 Outlet Stores, Post Retail Operations, Ecommerce and Marketing Services. Cathy is currently enrolled in Goodwill Industries International Executive Development Program designed for Goodwill senior staff committed to pursuing the role of Goodwill CEO. Cathy holds a Master of Business Administration degree from Marylhurst University; Marylhurst, Oregon.
In 1987 along with his brother, Shawn Hoban, President, Tom cofounded Coast Real Estate Services. Under their leadership, Coast has grown into a diversified group of companies managing, brokering, and investing in over $3 billion in apartment, office, retail, and self-storage properties throughout the Pacific Northwest. Tom earned a bachelor’s degree in Business Finance from the University of Notre Dame in 1984 and spent several years in banking before starting the first of The Coast Group of Companies. The company has won numerous awards, including the Washington State Family Business of the Year award. In 2003, Tom and Shawn were recognized by the Notre Dame Alumni Club as co-alumni of the year. Tom is also columnist and a frequently quoted source in the real estate industry. He hosted his own weekend radio show and now speaks at industry events and universities on leadership and entrepreneurship. His oldest son, Tom Jr, is a senior at the University of Portland.
David Leslie is Executive Director of Ecumenical Ministries of Oregon (EMO). He has more than 25 years of non‐profit management experience including 20 years as the executive director of small and mid‐size community and faith‐based nonprofit organizations such as Austin Habitat for Humanity and Interfaith Ministries for Greater Houston. His board and community service includes the Oregon Ending Homeless Advisory Committee, National Religious Campaign Against Torture, and National Council of Churches Interfaith Relations Commission. Leslie received his Bachelor of Arts from The University of Texas at Austin and his Master of Divinity from Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary.
With a background in integrated marketing, Lewis left a public relations agency in 1996 to start his career in search engine marketing. Since then, he’s helped grow businesses by connecting his clients with their constituents via the Internet. In 2000, Lewis founded Anvil, an integrated marketing agency specializing in analytics, search engine, and social media marketing for growth-oriented companies. Under his leadership, Anvil has received recognition from Portland Business Journal and Inc. Magazine as a Fastest Growing and Most Philanthropic Company. In 2008, Lewis created Formic Media, a sister agency to Anvil, providing a similar set of digital marketing services to small and multi-location businesses. Anvil and Formic merged to better delight and elevate clients as an expanded account team in 2014. He’s co-founder of a variety of organizations, including career community pdxMindShare, eROI and SEMpdx, a Portland-area SEM professional trade association. Active in his community, Lewis is currently involved in non-profit charity and professional trade organizations including early literacy program SMART (Start Making a Reader Today), The Entrepreneurs’ Organization (EO), Portland Incubator Experiment (PIE) and Nike+ Accelerator. Industry recognition and awards include Portland Business Journal’s Top 40 Under 40 Award, Top 25 Most Influential Pay-per-Click Experts and 2012 Marketer of the Year by American Marketing Association Oregon Chapter. Married with children, Lewis enriches his personal and professional life by co-hosting a weekly Internet radio show, DadsUnplugged.
Laura Mansfield is the CEO of PAGATIM, a creative audio agency based in Portland, Oregon. PAGATIM specializes in analytics, distribution, design and strategy in the digital audio space. Mansfield has been telling stories that change people's lives for more than 15 years. With an award winning background in broadcast journalism, documentary filmmaking, non-profit management and social entrepreneurship, Mansfield has the ability to connect with people and capture their story like no other.
Mary Monnat is President/CEO of LifeWorks NW, an agency that promotes a healthy community by providing quality and culturally responsive mental health and addiction services across the lifespan. She joined LifeWorks NW as a chemical dependency and mental health therapist in 1983 and moved through various management positions before becoming President/CEO in 1998. Mary earned her undergraduate degree from the University of Notre Dame and her Masters in Human Development from St. Mary’s College in Winona, Minnesota. She is currently a Board member of United Way of the Columbia-Willamette, Vision Action Network, St. Andrew’s Nativity School and the Women’s Commission on Alcohol and Drug Issues of Oregon. Mary previously served as President of the Oregon Alliance of Children’s Programs. In spring 2009, she received the Portland Business Journal’s Woman Executive of the year for non-profits.
Mary was actively involved as a member of the Governor’s task force to establish the Coordinated Care Organization criteria, and was appointed to the governance board for Health Share of Oregon, the metro area’s largest Coordinated Care Organization.
Jill Nelson is the founder and CEO of Ruby Receptionists, which was founded in 2003. With 135 staff members, Ruby Receptionists serves more than 2,600 small business professionals throughout North America. Nelson’s unique approach to business, “Practicing WOWism,” drives the company’s growth and success and helped secure coveted awards, including back-to-back years in the top three on Fortune Magazine’s Best Small Company to Work for in the U.S. list and six consecutive years as a fastest growing company in Oregon. Dedicated to supporting small business, she has served on the board of Portland’s Entrepreneurs’ Organization (EO) and a mentor for its Accelerator Program. In 2013, EO awarded Nelson their Entrepreneur of the Year award. In 2010, the Portland Business Journal honored her with an Orchid Award for her service as a business leader.
L’Arche Portland is a local nonprofit organization that belongs to the international Federation of L’Arche. With over 147 organizations in 35 countries around the world, L’Arche International is a global leader in engaging, honoring and celebrating people with intellectual disabilities. Noethe previously held leadership positions at St. Andre Bessette Catholic Church (Downtown Chapel) and with Holy Cross Associates, as well as roles in campus ministry and residence life at the University of Portland. His leadership and partnership with the Congregation of Holy Cross was recognized in 2009 when he was presented with the Spirit of Holy Cross Award. Noethe received his Bachelor of Arts and Master of Nonprofit Administration from the University of Notre Dame. He is currently a Board member of New City Initiative.
A graduate of Washington State University, Terry joined the staff of the Murdock Trust after working with a national organization, Young Life, for nearly 25 years. During his tenure with the Trust, Terry has worked with a large and diverse number of organizations, mostly within the general grant making areas of health and human services and education. With a special interest in organizational growth and leadership development, Terry has also helped to enhance and expand the enrichment programs that the Trust offers to its constituency. In essence, these programs are designed to strengthen the organizations in which the Trust serves. As the senior program director for enrichment initiatives, Terry is now responsible to oversee all of the Trust's work in this dynamic area.
Kay Toran is the President and CEO of Volunteers of America Oregon (VOA Oregon), Kay Toran provides the overall leadership and strategic direction for the organization. VOA Oregon is a broad-based human services organization providing programs designed to improve the lives of Oregon’s children, families, and seniors. Kay received her Bachelor’s degree from the University of Portland and Masters of Social Work degree from Portland State University.
DJ Wilson is president and general manager of the KGW Media Group, a position she has held since 2007. Wilson is currently the president of the Professional Advisory Board for the Edward R. Murrow College of Communications at Washington State University and previously served two terms on the Board of Governors of the WSU Foundation. She is also on the executive committee of the Portland Business Alliance Board, secretary of the Doernbecher Children’s Hospital Foundation Board and on the executive committee for the Citizens Crime Commission board. She is a Trustee of the Portland Art Museum, on the SMART (Start Making a Reader Today) board, secretary of the Classic Wine Auction Board and serves on the Pioneer Courthouse Square Board based in Portland. In 2012, Wilson was inducted into the Edward R. Murrow Hall of Achievement and was the recipient of the Portland Business Alliance “No Glass Ceiling” female leadership award. Wilson is also a past Portland Business Journal Orchid Award recipient.
