Center for Entrepreneurship: Entrepreneur Scholar Courses

The structure of the Entrepreneurs Scholars Program guides you from the inception of a business idea to its creation and implementation. You will meet with top experts in the field related to your venture to gain further information and insight on how to successfully approach venture creation. The Entrepreneur Scholars is a competitive program open to all University of Portland undergraduate students. Typically, students apply in the fall of their sophomore year for the program that begins in the fall of their junior year. For more information about the Entrepreneur Scholars Program, contact the Center for Entrepreneurship at (503) 943-7769 or ecenter@up.edu.

BUS 480 – Creating a World-Class Venture

Your learning plan will be based on your strengths and will focus directly on your business idea. You will work independently and in groups to develop your ideas and create your venture. In addition, you will network with business leaders who can assist in the development of your business idea, meet with the Center’s Master Mentors, attend OEF – Oregon Entrepreneurs Forum events, and conduct site visits.

Coverage of conceptual entrepreneurial skills needed to create a business that is globally competitive. Emphasis on creation and implementation of a plan for a potential world-class venture. (Open only to Entrepreneur Scholars.) Fee: $4,000.

BUS 481 – The Entrepreneur Apprenticeship

During this phase of the Entrepreneur Scholars Program, you will develop your feasibility study into a full-blown business plan. In addition you will complete an apprenticeship project that requires you to gain experience in an area related to your business. This could be based on the implementation of your business plan, an internship, or executing a significant project on or off campus. Other requirements include participation in meetings with other Entrepreneur Scholars students from across the country as well as attendance at a number or regional entrepreneurship events. You will have regular one-on-one meetings with the course instructor as the course is taught as an independent study without regular classroom meeting times.

Business plan development and implementation under supervision of a Professor in Entrepreneurship and the mentorship of an entrepreneur. (Open only to Entrepreneur Scholars.)




BUS 482 – Global Entrepreneurship

This portion of the program includes a trip outside of the United States to give the student an opportunity to experience how new businesses are created in other countries. You will also learn what is required to conduct business in a foreign country by arranging for business meetings in the host country.

Prepares students to conduct international businesses by comparing and contrasting the business practices of entrepreneurs in the United States with entrepreneurs globally. Immerses students in a foreign culture where they transact business on foreign soil. (Open to Entrepreneur Scholars only.)
