Campus Expansion: Triangle Park
The property provides a host of opportunities for natural resource restoration, a new greenway and trail, increased opportunities for public use, stewardship of natural resources by the University’s well-regarded environmental science program, and expansion of University facilities.
The University has been involved in a planning process with its public partners including the City of Portland, the Department of Environmental Quality, the Environmental Protection Agency and neighborhood leaders to discuss short- and long-term development plans for the property.
History
The Triangle Park property is an orphaned Brownfield site which was purchased by Triangle Park LLC in 1996 from the bankruptcy estate for the Riedel/Willamette Western Corporation. At the time of purchase, the property was the site of the Riedel North Portland Yard and housed a storage facility.
During its lifespan, the property served as a lumber mill, concrete packing plant, ship building facility, dry dock, ironworks, and power plant. Suspected contaminants of the property include PCBs, hydrocarbons, PAHs, and metals. Triangle Park LLC and DEQ have already engaged in cleanup activities, including the investigation of contaminated soil and groundwater, respectively. The University of Portland has worked with the City of Portland, Oregon DEQ, and the federal EPA to ensure the viability of restoring this property for University and community use.
