Campus Expansion: Home
The University of Portland completed a landmark agreement to purchase 35 acres of property along the Willamette River and adjacent to its 115 acre campus in December 2008, nearly five years after the University first publicly expressed interest in the land that had been an industrial site and owned by Triangle Park LLC. The new property has been nicknamed "River Campus."
Although the City of Portland has already rezoned the property to accommodate University of Portland uses, clean-up is expected to take several years, and much study is still needed to determine the precise plans for the land. During the next several years, the University will develop a master plan outlining its projected uses and vision for the property and will seek the advice of its public partners.
University officials anticipate opportunities for natural resource restoration, a new greenway and trail, and increased opportunities for public use, stewardship of the natural resources through its well-regarded environmental science program, as well as expansion of University facilities, freeing up valuable space on the current campus for new and expanded academic and residential buildings.
Prior to the original purchase agreement and since then, the University has worked closely with its public partners, including the City of Portland, State of Oregon Department of Environmental Quality, United States Environmental Protection Agency including EPA Region X personnel, and neighborhood leaders to discuss short- and long-term development plans for the property.
