Fellowships & Grants: Sophomores
If you are a freshman, sophomore, or junior considering a major scholarship, fellowship, or grant, now is the time to prepare! There are a few things to keep in mind while you prepare to apply for a major award:
- Keep your grades up; all awards demand high GPAs.
- Make sure you are taking courses that will prepare you for the project that you will someday be outlining.
- Get involved. Scholarship committees look for well-rounded people. If you see a need on campus for some organization that does not exist, start it.
- Think about summer jobs/internships that are in line with the trajectory of your file. Demonstrate through your involvement your commitment to the direction your life is taking.
- Build relationships with professors. The more your professors know you and your work, the better the letter they will write for you down the road.
To get the process started, complete a Prospective Scholarship Applicant form. After completing the form, then call or email the Office of Fellowships & Grants to schedule an appointment with Dr. John Orr, the Director of Fellowships & Grants, to discuss your future plans and to decide what awards are appropriate for you. And remember, the earlier in your college career that you start thinking about applying for one of these awards, the better the application that you will one day submit. So get started today!
