Financial Aid: Study Abroad Student Aid
Financial aid is available for most study abroad programs. If you are interested in enrolling in a study abroad program, contact the Studies Abroad Office.
Institutional Programs
Institutional programs are those run by the University of Portland. They include:
|
Academic Year |
Summer |
|
|
Institutional (except Tuition Exchange), federal, and state aid are available for use in any Academic Year institutional study abroad program. Generally, only federal student loans are available for Summer Study Abroad programs, although federal grants may be available to students who qualify.
IES Programs
The Institute for European Studies (IES) is a program not run by individual schools but by the IES. The University of Portland has only a partial consortium agreement with IES. Therefore, only federal and state aid (including loans) may be used for most IES program, with a few exceptions. The programs listed below may be eligible for institutional aid financial aid transfer with approval from the Studies Abroad Office to receive institutional aid. There is a cap of 37 spaces available for aid transfer to IES programs during the academic year. Minimum 3.2 GPA is required to be eligible for institutional financial aid transfer.
|
Approved Programs:
|
|
IES summer programs are eligible for federal financial aid transfer only. There is no cap on the number of students who can participate in summer IES programs and receive aid.
Other Programs
There are numerous study abroad programs that do not fall into the previous categories. Any program that does not qualify as institutional or IES would be categorized as “other.” No institutional, federal, or state aid can be used for these programs through the University of Portland. Check with the host institution for aid options available through their Office of Financial Aid. Students should complete the Non-UP Study Abroad Checklist which can be obtained from the Office of Financial Aid.
American University
Only Political Science major students who have the director of the AU program’s signature endorsing their application for the Washington Semester program at AU are permitted to receive transfer of financial aid from University of Portland to American University. Such students will be permitted to transfer their institutional and federal aid to American University. Students should complete the Washington Semester at American University Checklist which can be obtained from the program director.
