Founders Day: Jennifer Brannan '12
Jennifer Brannan, a senior civil engineering major, will be doing service abroad after she graduates this spring. She was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship, through which she will be working on creating an organic water treatment solution in Kanpur, India.
Jennifer’s interest in water quality was developed in Environmental Engineering, her favorite class at UP. This class and others have helped Jennifer grow intellectually as well as emotionally.
“The engineering classes have definitely prepared me to pursue a career in engineering and a lifestyle committed to sustainability,” Jennifer said.
After the Fulbright program, Jennifer plans to continue working on finding sustainable water-quality solutions in developing nations. She wants to work with either the World Health Organization or with a non-profit organization to provide people with safe water.
For Founders Day, Jennifer is presenting a 20-foot concrete canoe design that she made with six other students. These students have been working on the project all year, focusing on design during first semester and fabricating the canoe second semester. The team will go on to present and race their canoe at the Pacific Northwest ASCE Regional Student Conference.
“I feel that UP has prepared me because of what I have learned outside of the classroom,” Jennifer said. “My professors have encouraged and inspired me to dream big and pursue my goals, and they have come alongside me to help me achieve.”
