Joseph Starzl, a senior philosophy and German studies major, will present his Founders Day project on differing political philosophies. He will discuss the differences between Marxism and libertarianism and talk about the parts of these two philosophies that overlap.

Joseph’s interest in political philosophy has come out of classes like Socio-Political Philosophy, his favorite class at UP, as well from activities and trips. In particular, his education has been influenced by his trip to Nicaragua with the Moreau Center for Service and Leadership.

“The Moreau Center’s Nicaragua Immersion trip had a wide impact on my education,” Joseph said. “I developed my beliefs on social justice, international relations, immigration, politics, economics, myself, and my future.”

After going on the Nicaragua Immersion, Joseph’s goals have shifted to the international community. After graduation, he plans on volunteering internationally, and he wants to eventually pursue a career in foreign relations or immigration.

Although Joseph’s education has been primarily academic, he has also learned from numerous extra-curricular studies that have completed his learning experience.

“I’ve achieved a very cosmopolitan education through UP,” Joseph said. “Study Abroad, the Moreau Center, and the International Languages and Culture department not only gifted me with knowledge, but also sparked my passion for travel and culture.”
