Development: The Importance of Unrestricted Giving

The University of Portland Fund raises unrestricted funds for the University's greatest needs, providing means each year to sustain and expand academic programs, enhance student life, support faculty development, advance technological needs, and provide financial aid. More than 94% of all students receive financial aid, and a UP education would not be possible for many deserving students without the annual support of thousands of alumni, parents, foundations and corporations, and other community friends.

In the fiscal year that ended on May 31, 2009, the University of Portland raised more than $19 million in pledges and gifts to support a myriad of campus needs. Of that amount only $1.75 million – donations to the University of Portland Fund – were available for immediate use in the discretion of the University. The Fund is critical to the flexibility needed by an institution of our size and complexity.

A stable, growing University of Portland Fund allows us to chart a confident course for our future. It would take an additional $29 million in endowment to replace the revenue the Fund raised last year.

Donor Societies

Every gift to the University of Portland, no matter how large or small, is important. Every donor is important. We recognize all donors each year in the President’s Stewardship Report because the sum of all those gifts has a significant impact on our mission.

Some donors merit special acknowledgement and recognition for their commitment and we have developed the donor societies listed in the left margin to honor them. Please consider supporting the University in such a way to qualify for these special groups.
