In keeping with the central tenets of its mission – teaching and learning, faith and formation, and service and leadership – the University of Portland is committed to the full access and inclusion of all students in its programs. Accessible Education Services (AES) is entrusted with the role of coordinating accommodations for our students with disabilities while at the same time upholding essential institutional standards.
This access is mandated by the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) as amended and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, both requiring post-secondary institutions to provide equal access and reasonable, individualized academic accommodations for students with disabilities. The ADA and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act require that:
no person with a disability will, on the basis of that disability, be denied full and equal access to academic programs and activities or otherwise be subjected to discrimination by the University.
The University is committed to assuring compliance with the spirit, as well as the letter, of the law. This guide is meant to provide faculty with the essential and practical information needed to provide accommodations and plan for access in the classroom. Faculty are also encouraged to read the University of Portland AES Policy and Procedures.
