Student Conduct Program: Introduction
At the core of student conduct is the opportunity for formative and developmental learning, based in the Holy Cross tradition, to challenge students to reflect on their choices, take responsibility for their actions, and grow in personal understanding of one’s responsibilities and privileges within both the University community and beyond. This often happens through conversations, hearings, and outcomes which provide individual attention and care for the persons involved. Through this process students are challenged to reflect upon their choices, values, and goals and to determine if these elements are in line with their vocation, who they are, and who they are becoming. Opportunities are provided to students that empower them to learn about the communities they are a part of, how they impact the world around them, and developing relationships with others. Ultimately, through their experience within the student conduct process, students will discover their own growth in a holistic manner — mind, heart, and hands.
“The University of Portland is a Catholic university guided by the Congregation of Holy Cross. As our mission statement articulates, we strive to develop the whole person through teaching and learning, faith and formation, service and leadership. The result of this mission is graduates who are prepared to respond to the call of Jesus Christ to serve the needs of the world and the whole human family.
As part of our Catholic mission, it is important that we at the University of Portland are people of great character and moral virtue. We are called to live as Jesus did: to show love and respect to all we encounter, to order our actions towards the service of God and others, and to create a community in which all can thrive. Rooted in Gospel values, ours is a community that respects the dignity of every person. Our University policies reflect the importance of holding one another accountable to this ideal.
Our University is not a microcosm of the larger society and it is not intended to be a miniature of the world outside its front gate. The University of Portland is a mission-based community. What differentiates us from the larger society is our emphasis on community, collaboration, and learning together in the pursuit of truth in the Catholic tradition. For these reasons, our policies hold students to a higher standard and have as their goal educating students and preserving community.” – Life On The Bluff, 2014 – 2015 (Introduction – page 16)
