Meet the Language Assistants!
Chinese Language Assistants:
My name is Junjie Chen, and I am a Sophomore at UP. I was born in Guangzhou, China and moved to the US when I was thirteen years old. I am a Civil Engineering Major and getting a minor in Environemntal Science. My first language is Cantonese, and I went to school in China studied Chinese Mandrain. I am a fluent speaker of both languages and at the same time trying to improve my English by tutoring students like you! I love helping students with learning Chinese, because not only am I proud of the fact that my home language is being taught here at UP, but also I am able to make friends with students who are interested in the Chinese language and culture. In my free time, In enjoy eating and cooking Chinese food and playing video games with my friends. If you have any questions about the Chinese language and culture, talk to me!

This semester, I am leading a Chinese conversation table for students who want to improve their conversational skills. Feel free to come by and talk in Chinese. For more information about joining in on a conversation, contact me at email@example.com.
French Language Assistants:
Hello all! My name is Brett Bankson and I am a junior at UP. I grew up in Bellevue, WA and have lived in Portland for almost 3 years, with a 5-month jaunt off to France. I study French, Psychology, and Neuroscience and have interests in bilingualism and speech disorders. Student tutoring appeals to me because it allows peers work together towards an educational goal outside of the classroom. After graduating, I hope to pursue either cheese-making or neuropsychology and build a life in the Pacific NW.
German Language Assistants:
My name is Rebecca Larrabee, and I am a senior majoring in Global Business and German. I have a great love for the language that stems from growing up around it and visiting relatives in Germany. As a sophomore, I had the wonderful opportunity to spend a year abroad in Salzburg, allowing me to pursue travel, experience new cultures and languages, and advance my German. I am excited for the opportunity to work with other students to practice and improve German language skills.
Hallo! My name is Erin Petersen, and I am a junior Organizational Communication and German Studies double major here at UP. Originally from Sioux Falls, South Dakota, I’m happy to call Portland my temporary home and was also lucky enough to spend two semesters in Salzburg, Austria last year—what a dream! I’ve studied German for the past 6 years and am looking forward to using my skills in this new situation as a tutor. I have passions for languages, cultures, and traveling and intend to pursue a career encompassing all of them. In order to contact me for German help, email me at firstname.lastname@example.org. I look forward to meeting you!
Spanish Language Assistants:
Hello my name is Gabriela Mata, I am a senior triple major in Psychology, Spanish and Sociology. I was born in Guanajuato, and I enjoy visiting my hometown every year. As a UP student, I went to Granada and fell more in love with Spanish. I look forward to helping you improve your Spanish.
Mackenzie Laughlin: I am a Spanish student and tutor from West Linn, OR. I am also studying Political Science and Economics. This year I am tutoring students in Spanish in order to solidify my own language skills and learn more about how to help students develop a second language. I love learning languages and would like to learn French and Arabic as well. In the future I would like to teach in English as a second language in Spain.
My name is Monica Solano. I’m a Global Business and Spanish double major. I'm from Aloha, OR. I don't have a middle name. I love Spanish poetry. I have a pretty unhealthy obsession with pie. Every morning, I wake up to songs by Devendra Banhart. I'm allergic to penicillin. Junot Díaz is my favorite author. I love vintage and thrift shopping. Little Miss Sunshine and Pulp Fiction are my favorite movies. You can find me running on Willamette at night listening to Outkast or sewing something I shouldn't have bought, but feel guilty throwing away. Or, you can just make a tutoring appointment.
