Mailing Services: Frequently Asked Questions

Can University employees receive personal mail through the University? Departmental boxes are for University business only.
Do both addresses need to be included on a campus mail envelope? Campus mail must have either a first and last name or department name in the “To” and “From” fields and must include the Mail Stop Code of the recipient. When reusing an intra-campus envelope, be sure to completely cross out the previous address on the envelope.
What forms of payment do you accept? Cash or check (with proper ID). Credit and debit card are not accepted.
Can I ship packages with vendors such as FedEx or UPS from the University Mail Center? The Mail Center offers USPS and UPS services for personal shipping. All services, including FedEx, are available for departmental shipping, however, UPS is the University’s preferred shipper. Any prepaid item for UPS or FedEx can be dropped off at the Mail Center during business hours.
At what times does the Mail Center receive mail shipments daily? United States Postal Service (USPS) mail is received and shipped to and from this location twice daily, at 8:15 a.m. and 2:55 p.m.  In addition UPS and FedEx packages and documents are received and picked up once daily. See Outgoing Mail for a complete list of deadlines.
What are some ways I can save money when I send mail?
  • Screen your mailing list for unnecessary names, duplicates, and incomplete addresses.
  • Do not over-insure. USPS and UPS will pay only the actual value of the item, not the declared value.
  • Use postcards for short messages or announcements.
  • Combine mailings when possible into a larger envelope for distribution at its destination.
  • Use business reply envelopes provided by vendors, instead of department envelopes.
  • Use a fax machine or email when time is crucial, instead of using costly express or overnight mail.
