    &lt;span&gt;University of Portland president Rev. E. William Beauchamp, C.S.C. has appointed Rev. Edwin Obermiller, C.S.C. as Special Assistant to the Vice President within the University Relations division, effective July 1.&amp;#160;Obermiller will also serve as a pastoral resident in Kenna Hall.&lt;/span&gt;

  &lt;p&gt;
    &lt;span&gt;
      &lt;span&gt;In 2006 Obermiller left the University to serve as the Director of the Office of Vocations for the United States Province of the Congregation of Holy Cross.&amp;#160;In 2009 he was named an Assistant Provincial with oversight for the Offices of Vocations, Development and the creation of the Office of Communications. &amp;#160;&lt;/span&gt;

    &lt;span&gt;University of Portland has announced a RISE Campaign gift of $250,000 from Larree M. Renda, an executive with Safeway Inc., based in Pleasanton, Calif., and a member of the University&amp;#8217;s Board of Regents.&lt;/span&gt;
  &lt;/p&gt;
  &lt;p&gt;
    &lt;span&gt;The gift will help finance improvements of Joe Etzel Field, formerly Pilot Stadium, which was completed prior to the 1988 baseball season. The stadium was renamed in the summer of 2004 in honor of former Portland athletic director and long-time head baseball coach Joe Etzel. &lt;/span&gt;

    &lt;span&gt;The first phase of the baseball stadium upgrades include installing artificial turf, in place of the natural grass field, stadium lights and outfield/perimeter fencing, according to athletic director Scott Leykam.   &lt;span&gt;University of Portland has been awarded $446,307 by the National Science Foundation to increase retention in engineering and computer science with a focus on at-risk first year and sophomore students. The University was one of nine universities and colleges nationwide -- and the only one in Oregon -- receiving NSF grants as part of a public-private partnership called Graduate 10K+. &lt;/span&gt;

    &lt;span&gt;NSF has partnered with Intel and GE to stimulate comprehensive action at universities and colleges to help increase the annual number of new graduates in engineering and computer science by 10,000.     &lt;span&gt;University of Portland student Alex Calvert became the for-profit business group winner of the University&amp;#8217;s third $100K Challenge, an expanded business plan competition hosted by the Center for Entrepreneurship and the Launch Pad group.&lt;/span&gt;

  &lt;p&gt;
    &lt;span&gt;Calvert&amp;#8217;s winning business plan was creating a Portland franchise of Zoom Room, a high-end training facility and store for dogs and their owners. Calvert, along with his father Jonathan Calvert, secured the exclusive rights to have the franchise in eight locations in the Northwest. Their first store, located in the Pearl District, will open in June 2013 under the name Zoom Room Portland.&amp;#160;&lt;/span&gt;

    &lt;span&gt;Edith Campagna, a 1951 graduate of the University&amp;#8217;s School of Nursing, passed away in February in Medford, where she and her husband resided for more than 50 years. The Campagnas generously have supported the University over the years with lifetime&lt;/span&gt;
    &lt;span&gt; giving to UP totaling nearly $360,000.&lt;/span&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Baer has gained a national reputation as one of professional sports&amp;#8217; leading visionaries. Under his direction, the Giants opened Pacific Bell Park in 2000 to widespread acclaim, won baseball&amp;#8217;s World Series in 2010 and 2012, and are one of only four teams to exceed three million in attendance for eight consecutive years (2000-2007). Baer was marketing director for the Giants from 1980 to 1983 and has been a key strategist for the organization since 1992, when he was named executive president.
