Moreau Center: Ongoing Volunteer Opportunities
If you have a specific issue that interests you, or a certain population you'd like to serve, you are in the right place.
No Orientation/Training RequiredVolunteers may show up and begin serving on their first visit.
Downtown Chapel Brother Andre Cafe
Join residents of Portland's Old Town neighborhood for soup, coffee, cookies, and conversation on Friday nights. Brother Andre Cafe is part of The Downtown Chapel of St. Vincent de Paul Parish. Students leave from the Office of Volunteer Services at 5:30 p.m. to carpool to Brother Andre Cafe.
Ortiz Center
Volunteers provide homework assistance, often with children who are bilingual. Spanish speaking skills are helpful, but not required.
REX (Religious Experience with Exceptional People)
Join people with developmental disabilities one Saturday each month for faith sharing, holiday celebrations, and fun. One or Two Orientation/Training Visits Required
Macdonald Center

Tutoring and Mentoring
- Application ProcessTutor at one of a number of local schools for homework clubs, or read with elementary school children once or twice a week through the SMART program (Start Making a Reader Today) www.getsmartoregon.org. Big Brothers Big Sisters
- Application, Background Check, and Interview ProcessBig Brothers Big Sisters meets at nearby Portsmouth SUN Middle School on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 4-6 pm Volunteers commit to one hour per week (during the program time) to meet with a student. Volunteers are matched with a student based on personality and interests. During the hour, “Bigs” have the opportunity to interact one on one with their student. For example, they can do crafts, play a game, play basketball or other sports.
Doernbecher Children's Hospital

Elderly
Marie Smith Center: A day center for elderly where volunteers can socialize, lead activities, help serve lunch and/or snacks, and spend time with the guests. Contact the Moreau Center for more information at moreaucenter@up.edu or 503-943-7132.
Homelessness & Hunger
Brother Andre Cafe:

Portland Homeless Family Solutions: Volunteer as an Overnight Host, a Meal Provider, a Kid Time Helper, or an Extra Hand at this family shelter. Visit the PDXHomeless Family Solution website for more information, contact information, or to register to volunteer. Transition Projects: Volunteers pick up a prepared meal from the Commons, and then set up and serve the meal to about 90 people living in a shelter for homeless men. Housing
Habitat for Humanity:
Work with a group of UP students to construct homes for families with low incomes. The current worksite is a complex with 16 homes in SE Portland. Contact moreaucenter@up.edu for more information or to sign up for a work day.
Rebuilding Together: Rebuilding Together's mission is to preserve and revitalize houses and communities, assuring that low-income homeowners, from the elderly and disabled to families with children, live in warmth, safety, and independence. In partnership with communities, our goal is to make a sustainable impact. We make this impact through providing necessary repairs free of charge to existing homeowners. L'Arche Nehalem: There are two L'Arche homes in the Portland area. Spend time with a handicapped member to expand his/her relationships outside the home. Share your skills for repairs, cooking, gardening, sewing, or respite care. Or volunteer long-term by living as an assistant in the home.
Children/Youth
Children's Relief Nursery: Janus Youth Services: Opportunities are available to help with cooking, painting, administrative work, leading classes in exercise, healthy meal planning, and crafting. We welcome your creative skills as learning tools for youth development.

Programas Latinoamericanos
El Programa Hispano: This Catholic Charities program provides a wide array of social services like mental health, domestic violence, school-based, and family services to low-income Latinos in the Portland metro area. Call (503) 489-6841.
Local Schools: After-school programs with youth in North Portland schools like James John SUN, Cesar Chavez SUN, and Step Up (Roosevelt High School/Open Meadow) often provide an opportunity to work with native Spanish-speakers without requiring volunteer Spanish fluency. Contact moreaucenter@up.edu for more information. Campo Azul: Empower immigrant workers through weekly evening ESL classes led by UP students. Group transportation usually provided through the Moreau Center when in session. Contact moreaucenter@up.edu for more information. Portland Public Schools
Many schools in the area welcome UP students in to their after school programs to assist students with homework, help supervisors with after-school activities, etc. Sabin Elementary, Faubion School, Cesar-Chavez K-8 school, Humboldt school, James John Elementary, and Vernon School are North Portland public schools with after-school SUN programs with immediate need for tutors and volunteer instructors. Inquire with the Moreau Center for contact info for specific schools. Portland After-School Tennis & Education The St Johns Tennis Facility hosts this after-school program where students from low-income backgrounds can come to get homework help, supervision, and tennis lessons. IRCO/Upward Bound This program serves a refugee/ESL population and has need of tutors at their David Douglas High School site in East Portland. Click here for more information. Roosevelt High School We have a special partnership with our neighborhood high school, Roosevelt, and you can always find a need there in the after-school SUN program for tutors. NELA Center for Student Success This community partner provides information and assistance through college admissions, financial aid and scholarship search resources.
