Moreau Center: Service Plunge FAQs
The invitation/reminder to participate will be mailed to all incoming students late May. Shortly after receiving your registration information online, the Moreau Center will confirm your registration through e-mail. An email with detailed information about the Plunge itinerary, packing lists, cost, and airport pick-up will be sent out late July/early August.
The Plunge will begin at 10am for check-in Tuesday, August 20th 2013, and end by 10am on Thursday, August 22nd 2013.
Plunge participants stay at a local Catholic school. Accommodations are modest; students will sleep on a gym floor. Students should bring sleeping pads, sleeping bags, and sleeping pillows and prepare for a simple stay experience.
Students will not be returning to their residence halls until after the Plunge ends on Thursday the 22nd of August. Students will have the opportunity to move in and set up their rooms after 10am on August 22nd, although a short hour will be given for students to move items into their room Tuesday after Service Plunge check-in.
Students will officially check in to their hall upon their return from the Plunge Thursday, August 22nd -estimated arrival time back to campus is 10am. Students will then have time to settle into their rooms and enjoy orientation weekend.
Before the Plunge, Residence Life will allow students to move their belongings into their rooms for an hour after check-in. Students have access to their rooms for one hour. This is the only opportunity for students to drop off their belongings before they head to the Plunge. It is important to note that students will not receive their room keys until Thursday morning when they return to campus at 10am. Please note that rooms will be locked after students drop their things off in their rooms.
We recommend you arrive in Portland between 6am and 9am on Tuesday, August 22nd. If your student needs assistance getting from the airport to UP we are able to pick them up at the airport, bus station, and train station any time between 6-9:30am on Tuesday. Please note that we cannot accommodate any students on campus prior to 6am on Tuesday August 22nd.
After you have booked your flight or train, e-mail firstname.lastname@example.org your itinerary and we will have a student leader pick you up and bring you to campus.
Please note that many parents choose to send their students ahead for the plunge and then arrive on Thursday. Likewise we have many parents who come with their students on Tuesday and stay in the area until Thursday. If the latter is your preference we can recommend accommodations, activities, and food options prior or on the day of service plunge registration.
The official registration confirmation email students receive after they register online for the plunge invites students to provide the Moreau Center with their travel information as soon as they know it if they would like Service Plunge Crew to arrange an airport, bus, or train station pick-up (available for August 20th between 6am and 10:30am only). Pick-up information will be confirmed with students and families by August 1st. Please note that the deadline to arrange transportation to campus is August 1st.
Yes, the Plunge is limited to 130 participants on a first come, first serve basis. After 130 students have registered we will switch out the regular form for a waitlist registration form. Please note that the Service Plunge has historically filled up within the first 6days of registration.
Interested participants will then be able to register through a waitlist form and will then be placed on a waiting list. If a spot opens, we will contact the first person on the waitlist and continue down the list for every slot that opens. If you need to register through the waitlist registration form you will receive a confirmation email that will give further information about what to expect if you are registered on the waitlist.
There is a $50 registration fee which will be collected at the check-in table before the Plunge. Check (made to the University of Portland) or cash will be accepted at registration. This fee offsets our costs for meals, participant t-shirts, transportation, and other expenses.
A packing list will be included in the detailed information email sent out at the end of July/early August. Casual clothes that can get dirty, gym shoes, a sturdy water bottle, and work gloves are all items students will need. Students need a sleeping bag and a sleeping pad. Participants will be sleeping on a gym floor- also a water bottle is key as we do not use plastic cups on the immersion.
The Service Plunge will gather 130 first-year students to get to know one another, volunteer at Portland agencies, and learn what the Moreau Center for Service and Leadership has to offer University of Portland students.
This 3 day immersion involves serving the local Portland community, meeting your fellow first year students, asking key questions, and learning about how to get involved and make an impact during your time at UP. Volunteer work may include nature trail maintenance, food box assembly, community gardening, school clean-ups, painting, and a wide variety of behind the scenes support work that helps local agencies serve their clients. The Service Plunge is a time to have fun, meet new people, work hard, learn more about the Moreau Center, UP, and jump into service in your new community. We are excited to meet you and excited to introduce you to your new community, and your new neighbors, through service. Special and ADA accommodations can be made upon request- call if you have questions.
This is completely up to your family. Parents may wish to be on campus to help their students drop off belongings Tuesday August 20th in the morning -again, this is only to drop off, not to move/settle in time. Otherwise, parents may help officially move/settle their students Thursday after 10am when the students return to campus from the plunge and residence halls are officially open. A resource is available for parents who would like to arrive Tuesday and stay until the end of parent orientation opportunities Saturday evening here: food and lodging.
Many parents cannot accompany their student on Tuesday, so we are happy to arrange flight/train pick-ups for students and keep them occupied until the Plunge starts. The parents’ orientation activities are optional once orientation begins, Thursday evening through Saturday evening, and the schedule will be available on the Student Activities webpage under "Orientation." A farewell time for parents is scheduled for Saturday evening after Opening Mass.
