Four University of Portland graduates awarded prestigious Fulbright grants to work and study abroad

Two of the Fulbrights are for English teaching assistant positions in Germany, awarded to Jennifer Luetkehans, of Olympia, Wash., and Danielle Jolicoeur, of Spokane, Wash. Luetkehans was a double major in English and German studies, and Jolicoeur a triple major in English, German Studies and French studies.

The University’s Arielle Le Veux of Salem earned an English teaching assistant position in Peru. Le Veaux was a double major in nursing and Spanish.

Another University of Portland graduate, Brady Shinn, of Boise, Idaho, received a research scholarship in Germany. Shinn was a double major in political science and German studies.

Twenty four students from the University of Portland have won Fulbrights. The University of Portland ranked first nationally among “master’s institutions” in a listing of top producers of Fulbright Awards for U.S. students in 2007-08, according to a Chronicle of Higher Education report. The previous year, the University ranked second nationally.

The United States Fulbright program began in 1946 after World War II to “assist in the development of friendly, sympathetic and peaceful relations between the United States and other countries of the world” through the exchange of students, scholars and professionals. The program operates in more than 140 countries worldwide.
