OPERATION RAINBOW
Bridget Beschen ’02 recently joined an Operation Rainbow
team of orthopedic surgeons, nurses, and volunteers for a two-week
medical project in rural Guatemala, where they performed 80 surgeries (repairing
club feet, removing tumors, repairing displaced fractures and hips, etc.) and
examined more than 500 men, women, and children, from infants (“displaced
hips, mostly”) to a 75-year-old woman (“complete hip
replacement”). Beschen, a biology major and captain of the
Pilot volleyball team, scrubbed on surgeries, assisted doctors
and nurses, made incisions, and finished stitching. Now a teacher
in Capistrano, California, she is headed to medical school next
fall.
