Father David Sherrer, C.S.C.
Professor of English
He strolled quietly onto campus in 1963 as an instructor in literature, and he will stroll quietly off campus this spring as a retiring professor of literature, but
between those wanders was a wonderful career that included deaning and vice presidenting
on The Bluff and seven years
as president of Kings College
in Pennsylvania. Renowned for his Shakespeare classes and his daily campus perambulations
(for many years with his dog Blue, now late and lamented), Dave Sherrer taught pretty much every aspect of the writing craft you can imagine, and Chaucer, Keats, Synge, Vonnegut, Orwell, O’Faolain, much else.
“Of all the hours in my day
the most rewarding are those
in class, and it is my conclusion after forty years that it is never a bad day in class as long
as I learn something, which
I do every class, so there you
are,” says Sherrer.
Of this fine teacher we celebrate, as John Falstaff says, his relish of the saltness of time,
and we wish him a reverend
care of his health, and commend his judgement and understanding, and thank the
Lord for this stern smiling
superb companion along the
educational road.
