Terry Misener, the University’s tart-tongued and brilliant nursing dean since 1998, died suddenly of a heart attack May 30. He was 64. The former Army colonel had fomented a tripling of majors and many millions of dollars in scholarships, and was immensely respected and argued with on The Bluff. “He had a messy office,” said acting dean Joanne Warner at his memorial, to much laughter. “Like his mind, it was a complex place housing varied and novel ideas. He was real and authentic, generous and fierce, tactless and enthusiastic, sympathetic and aggressive, active and creative, energetic and innovative. We loved him. It’s astonishing to us how many students have said since his death, He was the reason I am here. He left a legacy of courage and pride, and Terry, I tell you today that we will not let you down.” Yes, everyone wept.
