Here's a story. Two University of Portland students end up running thousands of miles together on the men's cross country team. Both earn All-American status, and both wear their Pilot jerseys for the last time at the United States Olympic Trials in Eugene this summer. They run in the ten-kilometer race, and neither John Moore nor Michael Kilburg quite has the gas to make the top three, the guys who make the Olympic Team, and they both realize this near the end, so they do something sweet and extraordinary, something that has the whole Hayward Field crowd chanting PORTLAND! They finish together, with the same time, crossing the line simultaneously. People wept. Somehow that story says something cool and strong about this university, yes?
