Donors & Donees

Every spring the University hosts a sprawling Scholar­ship Lunch in the Chiles Center, at which scholarship donors meet and chat with the students whose lives they changed. It has become a remarkably poignant and piercing event, with gales of laughter and not a few tears, and it seems to us that this event is the very essence of philanthropy and generosity at its most personal and intimate. The young men and women get to say thanks to a real live salty sweet human being; and the donors see what their generosity has wrought, what lives are elevated, what the future might bring.
