University of Portland’s University Singers, Women’s Chorale, and Jazz Band to perform February 17 concert
The University Singers will take on popular music, including contemporary a cappela arrangements and stirring pieces for women’s and men’s voices alone. They will be joined by the beautiful sounds of the Women’s Chorale, singing a varied program including several contrasting choral styles: a setting of “Ave Maria” by Portland composer Joan Szymko; “I Am In Love,” a haunting arrangement of an Appalachian folksong by Laura Parrotta; and a fun set of jazz standards, “Swing Around Suite,” featuring “A-Tisket, A-Tasket” in the style of Ella Fitzgerald, “God Bless the Child,” and “How High the Moon.” The suite will also feature individual soloists from the Chorale. The concert will conclude with a rousing performance by the dynamic, roof-raising University Jazz Band.
