University of Portland to host best-selling author and alumna Brigid Schulte Wednesday, April 9
Schulte’s recent release Overwhelmed: Work, Love And Play When No One Has The Time is currently the top-selling business book on Amazon and is among the top-ten best-selling books overall on the world’s largest online retailer. Overwhelmed explores time pressure, time management, and modern life.
Schulte, a mother of two, began the journey of writing Overwhelmed quite by accident, after a time-use researcher insisted that she, like all American women, had 30 hours of leisure each week. Stunned, she accepted his challenge to keep a time diary and began a journey that would take her from the depths of what she described as the Time Confetti of her days to a conference in Paris with time researchers from around the world, to North Dakota, of all places, where academics are studying the modern love affair with busyness, and to Yale, where neuroscientists are finding that feeling overwhelmed is actually shrinking our brains.
Schulte graduated from University of Portland in 1984 and Columbia School of Journalism in 1987. She has been a reporter at the Washington Post since 1999, currently covering social issues, and has been a Schwarz Fellow at the New America Foundation since 2011. Prior to working at the Washington Post, she was a national correspondent for Knight-Ridder news service.
On March 11, Schulte gave an interview with National Public Radio’s Fresh Air, which is available at this link: http://www.npr.org/2014/03/11/289018821/for-working-moms-key-to-balance-may-lie-in-elusive-leisure-time
