Recreational Services: OPP Trip Descriptions
Outdoor Pursuits Program Trip Descriptions Spring 2012
Intro to Mountaineering Course on Mt. Hood- Saturday, Feb 25th at 9am. $25 (transportation and equipment provided).
Learn how to wear crampons, wield an ice axe, and travel across glaciers as a roped team...not to mention enjoy the beautiful views only found up high in our wonderful Cascade Mountains. No experience necessary. Attending this course gives participants priority for the summit trip to be held March 31st-April 1st. Questions? Contact Kari Wise @ wise12@up.edu.
Overnight Snow Camp on Mt. Rainier - Saturday, March 3rd - Sunday, March 4
Learn how to build a snow cave and sleep in it! We will also be going over introductory winter first aid and hopefully do some snow shoeing! Enjoy the beauty and solitude of Mt. Rainier National Park and get the experience of a lifetime! No experience necessary, price and details to follow.
Rock Climbing in Central Oregon: SPRING BREAK Friday-Monday, March 9th - 12th. Beginners welcome, priority given to students that have participated in OPP climbing trips in the past, or the climbing course Fall 2011. We will be teaching basic and advanced skills. If you are only interested in climbing the rocks rather than learning the technical stuff, that is fine too! We'll have plenty of time to climb, learn, hike, hang out, eat, relax and enjoy the Central Oregon SUN! Saturday morning we'll be hiking IN-THE-DARK! to the top of Smith Rock to see the sunrise (optional for those late sleepers). From then on out we will be spending time on the ground and dangling from ropes! Cost will approximately be $50. (Very inexpensive for ANY rock climbing adventure - and about the same cost if you were to do the trip on your own!). Where the money goes: fuel, food, parking ass, campground fees (w/showers), Equipment Rental (harness, ropes, helmet, hardware, tents, sleeping bags, backpacks, cookware), and a few dollars for your wonderful trip leaders who will be keeping you entertained, safe, warm, dry; and showing you a ONCE-IN-A-LIFETIME adventure! Questions: contact Keri at krenowic12@up.edu Trout Lake
Snowshoe Trip March 24
Come snowshoe in the scenic Gifford Pinchot forest area at Trout Lake! Enjoy a moderately difficult snowshoe on the Jack Pine Trail, with a combination of trails in the woods with larch, cedar, fir and pine tree groves and open meadows and boulder fields. Although unfortunate, early logging cleared the way to provide views of Icicle Ride and Cashmere Mountain. 8 miles round trip, this trip will provide a fun, challenging, and beautiful day in the outdoors!
Urban Paddle on the Willamette! Sunday March, 25th from 9 am- 3pm.
Want to spend some quality time outdoors getting to know the Willamette River? Want a great upper body workout and abdominal workout? Want to rock the 2012 life vest fashion trend? Come join the Outdoor Pursuits Program for a leisurely and fabulous paddle exploring the natural beauty of the Willamette River. There will be awesome aspects of nature, some potential wildlife, and great company! Difficulty: Easy-Medium. For more information: Contact Cassie Sheridan at sheridan15@up.edu
Mountaineering Summit Attempt in the Cascades- Sat-Sun, March 31st-April 1st. $TBD (transportation, meals and rental equipment provided). Use the skills learned in the Intro to Mountaineering Course offered by OPP to tackle a Cascades Mtn. peak (maybe even Mt. Hood!) and be one of the few to have the chance to stand on the summit and see for hundreds of miles all around! Those that completed the Intro to Mountaineering Course offered by OPP on Feb 25th will have priority to this trip.
SLEDDING! Last one of the season! Saturday April 14th
Hiking and Slackline-ing Sunday April 15th. Cost $15.
This hike will be near the Oregon Coast, with some awesome views as usual. We will also bring a slackline to set up between some trees. If you have never slacklined before you are in for a good time! Don’t worry we’ll help you out. Don’t know what slacklining is – check out this link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WffxRkcBooY - we’ll be doing it 3ft off the ground, not over a canyon! For more information contact Keri Krenowicz at krenowic12@up.edu.
Oregon Coast Overnight Camping: 4pm Friday 4/20 to Saturday 4/21. Cost $30.
We’ll head out to the gorgeous Oregon Coast and camp out Friday night. On Saturday we'll cook some pancakes for breakfast, pack-up camp, and go on a day-hike to enjoy the natural beauty of the area. For more information contact Jared Johnson at johnsonj15@up.edu.
