Shepard Freshman Resource Center: Getting Involved in Campus Life
The years you spend at the University should include more than hour upon hour of study in the library. Education of the mind is just one aspect of a University of Portland education; we believe that education of the heart—inside and outside the classroom—is just as important. You can make the most of your years at the University by getting involved. Here’s how:
- Join a student club or organization.
- Get involved in an academic program’s co-curricular activities such as an academic club or the Center for Entrepreneurship.
- Participate in volunteer service through the Moreau Center for Service and Leadership.
- Nurture you spiritual side by participating in campus ministry programs like liturgies, retreats, or Bible study.
- Play an intramural sport.
- Become an ASUP (Associated Students of the University of Portland) senator for your residence hall, college or school, or class.
- Join the Campus Program Board (CPB) and help plan events for the student body.
- Work on The Beacon (student newspaper), The Log (yearbook), or at KDUP (campus radio station).
- Join The Beacon and The Log’s photography team.
- Share your artistic talents with ADvantage (the on-campus student advertising agency).
- Participate in your residence hall’s community life. Run for hall council.
- Join a musical group or ensemble.
- Try out for a theater production.
- Attend campus cultural events like plays, concerts, performances, lectures, and art exhibits.
- Relax at fun events—movies, speakers, concerts, and comedy shows.
- Get moving in Howard Hall (the intramural building) with aerobics, swimming, basketball, weight lifting, and more.
- Cheer for a Pilot sports team at a soccer, volleyball, basketball, baseball, tennis, golf, cross country, or track event. Or join the cheer-leading squad/dance team for men’s basketball.
- Get off-campus. Take Tri-Met (public bus) downtown or to Lloyd Center for dinner, a performance, or festival. Grab a friend and take a walk to explore St. Johns.
