University of Portland’s University Singers to tour Puget Sound region January 9-13

The University of Portland’s University Singers will tour the Puget Sound region from January 9-13. The University Singers is comprised of student musicians selected by audition from across the University regardless of major and is considered the University’s top concert choir. Performances are free and open to the public and include:

Wednesday, January 9, 1:30 p.m., Concert, Sacred Heart Parish, Lacey

Thursday, January 10, 7 p.m., Concert, Bellarmine Prep High School, Tacoma

Friday, January 11, 7:30 p.m., Concert, Holy Names Academy, Seattle

Saturday, January 12, 5 p.m., Mass, Sacred Heart Parish, Bellevue

Sunday, January 13, 9:30 a.m., Mass, Our Lady of the Lake Parish, Seattle

Sunday, January 13, 12 p.m., Mass, St. James Cathedral, Seattle

The choir will sing a program of sacred and secular works from the Renaissance to today, including a setting of the Magnificat by Peter Chamberlain, a member of the choir and a junior engineering major.

The choir will also be performing private concerts at Olympia High School, John Paul II High School (Lacey), Panorama (a retirement community in Lacey), Shelton High School, Gig Harbor High School and Bishop Blanchet High School (Seattle).

The director of the University Singers is Michael Connolly, D.M.A., professor of music at the University since 1988. Connolly is director of the University’s music program and former chair of the department of performing and fine arts. He has served as national chair of the National Association of Pastoral Musicians, the Catholic liturgical music organization.
