University of Portland establishes the O’Dea International Scholarship

The University of Portland has established the O’Dea International Scholarship, endowed by alumnus G. Kelly O’Dea ‘70, a former student in the university’s Salzburg Study Abroad Program. Valued in excess of $100,000 , the scholarship is named in honor of his family which includes two additional Salzburg alumni (Julie and Kitty).

Its purpose is to encourage global learning and exchange by assisting deserving University of Portland scholars in that pursuit. The scholarship will give a preference to students with financial need who are participating in the Salzburg Study Abroad Program. Other possible scholarship recipients are students with financial need who are enrolled in a university program that involves “global change and cross-culture collaboration through international study and travel.”

According to O’Dea, “The Salzburg program was a truly life changing experience that opened my eyes wide to the world and crystalized my goal to pursue a global career.”From UP he achieved a Global MBA with Distinction from the prestigious Thunderbird School of Global Management and set out to build a global career that would take him to over 60 countries. Cited in a Harvard Business School case as “a global marketing pioneer, business builder and change leader ,” O’Dea’s resume includes President-Worldwide Clients at Ogilvy & Mather and President, Foote Cone & Belding Worldwide, both top global communications companies. He is currently Chairman of AllianceHPL, a private strategic services firm focused on applied innovation for large multi-national companies and early stage firms focused on new technology applications across a range of markets.

O’Dea has served on various corporate and non-profit boards, including six-term Chairman of Outward Bound International, Chairman of The Thunderbird School of Global Management, and 12 years on the University of Portland’s Board of Regents. He devotes much of his free time to higher education, competitive sport and Outward Bound, where he has hosted several expeditions.

The University of Portland is an independently governed Catholic university guided by the Congregation of Holy Cross. U.S. News & World Report ranks the institution as one of the top ten regional universities in the West. It is the only school in Oregon to offer a College of Arts & Sciences, a graduate school, and nationally accredited programs in the schools of business, education, engineering, and nursing.
