Studies Abroad: Summer Programs
The summer programs provide students with six credit hours in just five weeks. While some programs are specific to major requirements, others provide core credit in the areas of literature, art, history, theology, and philosophy, which apply to all UP students. Program fees include housing, tuition, insurance, and excursions.
The following programs will be offered summer 2015:Arles, France Summer – Students will experience Southern France in this language proficiency program. Students must have completed FRN 301/302. While in Arles, students will live with homestay families and all instruction is in French.
Beijing Summer - Students will experience Chinese culture through the summer program in Beijing, while earning six credit hours. For 2015, the program will be directed by Dr. John Orr.
Costa Rica Summer - Students will have the opportunity to enhance Spanish skills in the classroom and with a home stay family. Students will also learn about the cultures of Costa Rica and other Central American countries through readings and discussions in class, and program excursions that will explore the country of Costa Rica. Excursions include a 3-day/2-night trip to Monteverde, as well as, day excursions to Isla Tortuga, Los Santos, Cartago, Limon and the Tirimbina Rainforest Center. All program activities will be done in Spanish.
Europe Summer - Students will spend three and a half weeks in Siena, followed by twelve days in Salzburg. The program includes visits to Florence, Assisi, and several Tuscan hilltop towns, as well as excursions to Berchtesgaden and Burghausen in Austria. Students will also have the opportunity to explore on their own due to being centrally located in Europe.
- The London Summer Business program provides the opportunity for Business majors and minors to take 6 credits of upper-division Business and Economics courses while living in downtown London. Students will also participate in excursions and day-trips within the city of London and to historic nearby sites.
London Nursing & Science Summer - Students can take two of the offered courses while in London. Excursions include visits to Cambridge, Canterbury, Dover, Hampton Court, and Greenwich. Students also visit the National Portrait Gallery, Westminster Abbey, the Natural History Museum, and the Science Museum. The program also includes two theatrical performances.Salzburg, Austria Summer I: Engineering - Students will spend five weeks in a setting which allows a first-hand look at Austrian culture and European engineering facilities while fulfilling required courses. The program typically includes excursions to various parts of Austria and Germany, including Munich, Vienna, Lake Fuschl, Hallstatt, and the Mauthausen concentration camp.
Salzburg, Austria Summer II: Arts - This program will allow students to have a first-hand look at the culture and language of Austria. This experience includes excursions to various parts of Austria and Germany, possibly including Munich, the Austrian Lake district, the salt mines at the Celtic village of Hallstatt, and the church and convent of Chiemsee.
Segovia, Spain - Students will have the opportunity to enhance Spanish skills in the classroom and with a homestay family. Students will also explore Madrid's major art museums and government offices, Valle de los Caídos and El Escorial, Civil War sites, and other sites in and near Segovia. All instruction and all program activities are done in Spanish, must complete SPN 302 prior to start of program.
Tokyo, Japan - Students receive six credit hours while studying at Sophia University in courses selected from economics, history, fine arts, literature, business, theology, sociology, and Japanese. Instruction is in English, except for Japanese language classes.
Toledo Summer - Toledo has a rich heritage from the Jewish, Muslim, and Christian cultures from the early Middle Ages to the present time. Madrid is easily accessible by rail or bus. Students will have the opportunity to develop Spanish skills in the classroom with faculty from Spain. Participants will reside in the residence at the Fundación Ortega y Gasset. Meals will be provided. Excursions may include trips to Madrid, Segovia, and the Route of Don Quixote. Upon their return to Portland, students will be prepared to enroll in 200-level Spanish courses.
