Studies Abroad: Costa Rica Summer - 2016
Students must complete Spanish 201 & 202 before the program is scheduled to begin. In Costa Rica, students will take SPN 307 Intensive Advanced Composition and Conversation, a six-credit upper-division Spanish course equivalent to SPN 301 and 302, taught by UP instructor, Andrea M. Castanette and a Costa Rican instructor. All instruction will be in Spanish. Upon completion of this program, students may proceed to any other upper division class in Spanish.The Experience:
Students will have the opportunity to enhance Spanish skills in the classroom and with a home stay family. Students will also learn about the cultures of Costa Rica and other Central American countries through readings and discussions in class, and program excursions that will explore the country of Costa Rica. Excursions for 2016 are still being coordinated. In the past, excursions have included a 2 day/1 night stay at Monteverde and Osa Peninsula, day trips to Tirimbina for zip-lining, Rio Celeste for hiking, Los Santos for coffee plantation tours, and many more adventures around San Jose and Heredia. All program activities will be done in Spanish. These excursions are part of the program expenses.Living Quarters:
Students will live with a Costa Rican family to become fully immersed in the culture and language of Costa Rica. Home stays provide students with the opportunity to use their Spanish language skills and apply them to a home setting.Date and Cost:
The tentative dates for this program are: An arrival date or June 27th, 2016 and a departure on August 4th, 2016. The cost of the Costa Rica summer program is $5,460. The cost includes tuition for six credit hours, housing, meals, excursions, and health insurance. The cost does not include airfare.
The priority deadline for Costa Rica is November 1.
