This is a personal preference question. The program requires that participants purchase their own food. As a result, students must budget for food. If students are more likely to go out a few times a week, they should budget for more expensive meals. If a student can cook, he or she should budget around $100 a week. Also, students should take into consideration how much shopping and outside traveling they will do. School-sponsored trips will save students money because they will not have to pay for hotels or entrance into museums, but if students travel on their own on the weekends, they should make sure to include these expenses in their budget. Students can do some research on how much train tickets, hostels, and the average restaurant would cost in the areas that they are traveling in and try to work from there.

Yes, students must purchase books at the UP bookstore before they leave for the program.

Summer programs are an excellent way to fulfill core University or college requirements. Students should check with their advisors to see what classes would best help them fulfill some of their needed requirements. Summer programs are also useful for filling upper-division elective credits.

Students will stay at the University of Portland Center in Salzburg, which has laundry and kitchen facilities. Student rooms include singles, doubles, and triples. In London, students will stay in apartments with kitchen facilities.

The weather encompasses a wide range (50 to 80 degrees Fahrenheit). Students should be prepared for rain as well as warm, sunny days.

The 2013 Europe summer program will run from 06/25/13 to 08/01/13.

The total program cost for Europe summer 2013 is $6,300.

  POL/PCS 391 – Political Culture, Religion & Democratization in Central Europe — Dr. Gary Malecha

  (Can count toward political science major or minor, as an upper-division course outside of a CAS major, or as a free elective. Not a University core course.)

  THE/PCS 391 – The Church in Poland: Piety, Nation, and Resistance — Fr. Thomas Hosinski, C.S.C.
