Ali Na

Ali NaLecturer of Communication Studies

Ali Na joins University of Portland after completing her Ph.D. in communication at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in Spring 2017. At that time, she also received a graduate certificate in feminist studies from Duke University. While earning her master of art in performance studies at New York University, she also coached college debate. While teaching at UNC Chapel Hill, she supported student activist media installation work and helped establish an annual conference to highlight undergraduate scholarship in conversation with graduate students and faculty. Ali is eager to put these experiences to work in teaching across the field of communication studies at UP. She approaches communication from the primary areas of performance, media, and culture, with a focus on issues of race, nation, gender, and sexuality. She is currently revising her dissertation into a book manuscript. It explores shifting historical and geographical contexts in order to affirm the political possibilities of Asian and Asian American media and performance works to resist toxic stereotypes. After going east for graduate school, Ali is excited to return home to the Pacific Northwest and plans to continue her passions of cooking, making, and exploring the wonders of the Pacific Northwest outdoors.
