Eli Goldwyn

Eli GoldwynAssistant Professor of Mathematics

Eli Goldwyn received his Ph.D. in applied mathematics from the University of California, Davis. His dissertation focused on understanding the causes of spatial synchrony that has been observed in a variety of ecological populations. He then did postdoctoral research at the University of Chicago and the University of Michigan studying the spread of infectious diseases such as whooping cough and influenza in humans and viral and fungal pathogens in gypsy moths.More recently, he was the Harold L. Dorwart Visiting Professor in the mathematics department at Trinity College in Connecticut. Broadly speaking, Eli’s research involves creating mathematical models of the biological system in question and then confronting the model results with data through the use of statistical inference. Eli has a passion for teaching and mentoring students about both the beauty of mathematics and its power to better understand biological and physical systems. Eli grew up in Portland and is excited to return home. He enjoys being active and looks forward to the beautiful hiking, camping, and skiing found in the Pacific Northwest.
