photo of Laura BlackhurstBefore coming to the University of Portland, Laura Blackhurst worked as a nursing instructor for Clark College in Vancouver, Washington, where she served as a lead instructor and assisted in committee work focusing on curriculum revision, program accreditation, and faculty excellence. Prior to that she worked in a variety of roles, including as an inpatient R.N. in surgical/oncology, a nursing consultant and care manager, a textbook contributor, and as a volunteer nurse abroad. Laura is a proud University of Portland alumna, where she earned both her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in nursing and certification as a clinical nurse leader (C.N.L.) Laura is passionate about nursing education and utilizes her clinical nurse leader training to help identify student learning outcomes and strategies to achieve these goals. In her current teaching role, Laura is interested in the application of active learning strategies, expanding the role of technology in the classroom, and promoting critical thinking and decision making in nursing students. She hopes to pursue a doctor of nursing practice degree focusing on nursing education and leadership. When she is not working, Laura enjoys spending time with her family, reading, and traveling..
