Martin Cenek

photo of Martin CenekMartin Cenek is a computer science researcher and educator working in the fields of complex systems and intelligent cyber-physical systems. He builds integrative agent based models to study and understand coupled socio-ecological systems. The models aid in answering questions of how we, as a society, interact with natural resources and the environment at a time of global ecological change. His work on intelligent cyber-physical systems includes design of data driven machine learning tools to analyze power usage and weather conditions in order to build the next generation of micro-grid power management systems, analyze images of solid waste and characterize its composition to understand landfill behavior, or detect corrosion with hyper-spectral and 3-D imaging. Martin received his Ph.D. in computer science from Portland State University, specializing in artificial intelligence and complex systems. With his advisor, he studied how a model of a complex system processes information in order to solve a posed problem. Before joining the University of Portland, he was an assistant professor of computer science at the University of Alaska, Anchorage. With his undergraduate researchers, Martin studied how climate change will affect Alaska fisheries and subsistence harvest of caribou, and built data driven models to optimize the operation of engineered systems from Afghanistan to Alaska. When he is not in his lab or working with students, Martin loves to explore the outdoors with his family as an avid climber, bicyclist, and skier.
