The University of Portland’s operational resumption plans are subject to change as our understanding of COVID-19 evolves and based on guidelines set by the State of Oregon and Multnomah County. Please check this website often for the latest information.

The University of Portland is committed to delivering an excellent academic experience notwithstanding the challenges of COVID-19.

  • The Fall 2020 semester will last 16 weeks, like prior semesters.
  • Instruction will begin on Monday, August 24, and conclude on Wednesday, November 25, with final examinations administered online after Thanksgiving. This schedule will permit students to travel home and remain there until the Spring 2021 semester begins.
  • Fall Break will be eliminated to reduce travel-related exposure for all members of the UP community.
  • Most courses will be offered in-person and online simultaneously to offer flexibility for people at risk of COVID-19 and members of vulnerable populations.
  • The density of students in classrooms will be reduced through methods that include staggered in-person attendance for some courses, and using larger campus spaces not traditionally used as classrooms.
  • Masks will be required during in-person instruction and in all academic buildings.
  • Cleaning practices will be enhanced in all instructional locations.
  • Learning support programs such as advising, the Writing Center, and Learning Commons tutoring, will be conducted through remote options.
  • In-person delivery of labs, performance, and studio courses will be conducted, following all health and safety guidelines of the CDC, Oregon Health Authority, and Multnomah County.
  • Most faculty office hours will be conducted virtually.
