Major: Biology, Psychology Minor

I applied for this internship because I wanted to gain experience in the field of physical therapy. After I graduate, I plan to attend a three-year Doctorate of Physical Therapy graduate program and become a licensed physical therapist. As an intern, I was able to observe treatments while shadowing a physical therapist, asking questions to gain a better understanding of treatment plans and outcomes. I became more comfortable with communication, more familiar with the vocabulary used in the clinical setting, and learned a lot about how to properly use and clean equipment.

My favorite moment as an intern was being able to see patient progress. I had the opportunity to follow a few of the same patients over the course of my internship which showed me how much of a positive impact physical therapy can have. I also enjoyed getting to know each of the physical therapists at the clinic and observing their differences in practice.

I was able to earn credit for my internship through the OT/PT Internship course at UP. My class met once a week to learn more about this career path, applying for graduate school, and specific patient cases. We were able to have great conversations with each other and also discuss our different internship sites. I would encourage anyone who is interested in occupational or physical therapy to take this course.

Internships are great way to explore a specific career, learn more about what to expect, and figure out what you like and don’t like. They are also a great way to build professional rapport with people who are in your intended career field. These individuals will be a great resource as you move forward. My advice for other students is to start your internship search early and don’t be afraid to reach out to someone in the field for help with this. Also, be sure to ask a lot of questions!
