When and How to Access Hand Sanitizer on Campus

Purpose:

This document outlines University of Portland’s plans to provide hand sanitizer to the campus community.

Hand hygiene is a critical part of preventing the spread of COVID-19. Keeping hands clean is one of the most important steps we can take to avoid getting sick and spreading germs to others. It is best to wash your hands with soap and warm water for 20 seconds, however when this is not an option, community members should use hand sanitizer.  Hand sanitizer containing at least 60 percent alcohol is effective against COVID-19. Soap and water work to remove all types of germs on the skin, while hand sanitizers can quickly get reduce the number of germs by killing them on the surface. Hand sanitizers do not get rid of all types of germs, and they may not be as effective when hands are visibly dirty or greasy, so it is important to wash your hands whenever possible. Hand sanitizer should be applied to all areas of the hand by rubbing the product all over the surfaces of your hand, which should take approximately 20 seconds.

The University plans to provide hand sanitizer in multiple methods:

  • Dispensers inside Buildings: The University has installed hand sanitizer dispensers at high traffic areas and entrances and exits of buildings. A map of the dispenser locations is available at: campusmap.up.edu. When access to sinks is limited, please use the provided hand sanitizer to clean your hands and prevent the spread of germs. The Operations Task force will continue to evaluate high traffic areas and install additional hand sanitization stations as necessary.
  • Department Offices: Each department office will receive an allocation alcohol-based hand sanitizer for the Academic Year. The hand sanitizer Is 63% alcohol and complaint with CDC recommendations for use against COVID-19. To request an additional supply of hand sanitizer, place a work order with Physical Plant, and include the office and department needing additional supply.
  • Shared Workspace Hand Sanitizer Packet Allocation: Professors, or other personnel utilizing shared workspaces such as classroom lecterns, computers, microphones, or other equipment will be issued disinfectant wipes and hand sanitizer packets. These packets can be utilized to clean hands prior and after use of shared equipment. Hand sanitizer packets should be picked up from your department office. Departments are given a supply correlated with the number of courses taught; Professors should utilize these packets in the classroom when other methods of hand sanitization are not available.
  • Vehicle hand sanitizer: Carts and other University vehicles have been outfitted with refillable hand sanitizer bottles. This product is designed to be used when other methods of hand sanitization is not available. To refill your bottle, first check with the department that manages the vehicle. If the department supply is out please submit a work order on Physical Plant’s website.

COVID-19 has significantly disrupted the supply chain for crucial hygiene products such as hand sanitizer, disinfect, gloves, and PPE. Please be thoughtful of other community members and only use what you need. Limit use of University supplied hygiene products to your time spent on campus.
