January 13, 2022 - First Day Numbers from Post Arrival Testing

The following message was sent to the University of Portland undergraduate students on January 13, 2022.

I write to update you on the success of the first 1.5 days of COVID-19 testing.  Volunteer staff and faculty distributed 1830 tests to you and over 1100 have already submitted their results.  Thank you!  We all appreciate your prompt action.

The positivity rate of those reports yesterday yields a 4% rate.  This initial rate is quite hopeful, dare I say, positive, news.

However, let’s not celebrate quite yet. We still need all undergraduate students who can test, to participate.  We realize some cannot because they have had COVID-19 in the last 90 days and others are testing under a more frequent testing protocol. When we factor those students unable to participate in this post-arrival testing protocol, we are already at a 60% distribution rate.

I challenge you all to keep your participation strong.  If you have a test, take it soon and report the results.  For those still to acquire a test, please pick it up today (until 4 p.m.)—no need to wait until Friday.  Give yourself time to take the test and report your result as soon as possible.  I believe we all will be grateful to complete this process and return to a more normal campus life of in-person instruction and all sorts of other activities as soon as possible.

Finally, please remember Omicron is still around us. Keep your masks on as much as is reasonable, watch for any symptoms of COVID-19, and follow all isolation or quarantine protocols.  But also, let your spirits stay hopeful as we remember these are temporary measures.  We enjoyed a spring-like day yesterday.  There are better days ahead!

My prayers, my hopes, and my confidence in your resiliency remain steady.

God bless you all.
