July 15, 2022 Key Information in Preparation for the Fall 2022 Term at UP

The following message was sent to University of Portland students, faculty and staff on July 15, 2022.

Preparations have begun for a Fall 2022 term at the University of Portland that will see us welcome new faces, explore new coursework and research, and foster new connections within our community. As we look ahead with hope and anticipation for the upcoming semester, we are mindful that COVID-19 is still with us. To promote the health of our community, it will be important for us to rely on useful tools like vaccinations, preventative measures, testing and, if needed, managed care to address positive cases.

At the heart of the UP experience are in-person instruction, residential life, engaging activities and a fully operational campus. In advance of a large-scale return of students, faculty and staff beginning in August, important steps must be taken to ensure a safe, successful and uninterrupted academic semester.

Here is what you need to know and begin doing in the coming weeks:

Vaccination Requirement

  • All UP students, faculty and staff must receive an initial COVID-19 vaccine and at least one booster before the fall semester begins or apply for an approved exemption.
  • New students should upload their proof of vaccination and booster through the Health Center by August 15.
  • New employees will find instructions for submitting proof of vaccination and booster on the Pilots Prevent website.

  • New students seeking an exemption for religious or medical reasons may find information on the Health Center website.
  • Continuing students who received an exemption during the 2021-22 academic year must indicate their intent to renew the exemption for the 2022-23 year or upload proof of vaccination and booster through the Health Center.
  • New UP employees will find information for an exemption on the Pilots Prevent website.
  • Continuing faculty and staff who received approved exemptions during 2021-22 can anticipate communication from Human Resources regarding renewing their exemption, if needed. They may also contact Human Resources at hr@up.edu.

COVID-19 Testing

  • The University requests that students test themselves for COVID-19 before traveling to campus for the start of the fall semester; tests should be taken within 48 hours of travel. Self-test kits are available online from the Department of Health and Human Services. Anyone who tests positive should contact their health care provider and delay coming to campus until told that it is safe to do so by their health care provider.
  • Beginning with residential move-in, during new-student Orientation, and continuing throughout the Fall semester, antigen self-test kits will be available 24 hours a day through UP Campus Safety for anyone experiencing symptoms of COVID-19. The Health and Counseling Center will also be open on weekdays to offer PCR and antigen testing to any student with COVID-19 symptoms.
  • Especially for residential students, additional testing will be available on campus and strongly encouraged at the end of the first week of classes. More information on this testing opportunity will be communicated to residential students in mid-August.

Face Coverings

  • UP currently follows the recommendation of Multnomah County health authorities which strongly recommend that all individuals wear face coverings while in indoor spaces (excluding private residences and private offices). Students, faculty and staff are encouraged to wear N-95 or KN-95 masks.
  • Please note that in the future, UP will be obligated to comply with local, state, or national health guidelines should conditions warrant an indoor mask requirement. Likewise, UP could find it necessary to temporarily reimplement its own indoor face covering requirement in response to a potential surge in positive cases on campus.

Each of us have contributing roles to play in the success of UP. As Pilots, let’s do all we can to help ensure a safe and healthy life together on The Bluff. We look forward to seeing everyone in August!
