Message Regarding Summer and Fall Terms

The following message was sent to the University of Portland community on March 9, 2021.

Dear Students, Faculty and Staff,

I hope you had a nice weekend and that your week is off to a smooth start.

I am writing to provide some updates on summer and fall terms.

Summer 2021

Registration for Summer 2021 will open on Monday, March 22. Summer courses for undergraduates may be offered either in person or online. Please check the Summer schedule (which will be updated before registration begins) or contact the instructor of the course after  March 22 to know if a course will take place in person (indicated by “Campus” on the schedule). We do not foresee many courses offered in a format in which students would be able to be either in-person or online for the same course; i.e., “high-flex” format.

All in-person courses or other summer academic programming will meet the health and safety requirements established by Multnomah County and the Oregon Health Authority. Anyone participating in in-person courses will take part in any COVID surveillance testing that UP has in place for the summer.

Fall 2021

As Fr. Poorman announced in early February, the Fall 2021 semester will be primarily in person. To plan for the possibility that public health authorities will still limit classroom densities, approximately 25% of undergraduate courses will continue to be offered online in the fall, while most graduate courses will remain online (please check with your program director for details). Thus, we expect that most undergraduate students will have approximately 75% of their classes in person with one or two courses possibly being online.

The fall schedule, when it becomes available, will indicate those courses that we know now will be offered entirely online. Of course, please keep in mind that plans may change if pandemic conditions change. Indeed, as Fr. Mark mentioned in his message, “In the months ahead, we will closely monitor trends in COVID-19 positivity and the impact of new virus variants. We will be prepared to pivot to alternative plans, if necessary.”

Continuing students will begin registering for fall semester on Monday, April 12, and continue through Thursday, April 22. Students can see the Registrar’s Pilots page for the specific registration schedule.

Wishing you a nice rest of the week as we approach the beginning of spring.

Best,

Herbert A. Medina
