Face Masks

Face masks/coverings (e.g., disposable masks or cloth face coverings) must be worn by all individuals on campus at all times, including visitors. This includes public or communal settings in University buildings (e.g., common areas, common workspaces, dining areas, public spaces, hallways, stairwells, elevators, meeting rooms, classrooms, break-rooms, campus outdoor spaces, restrooms, etc.). This applies to the main University of Portland campus, both inside University buildings and outdoors, as well as off-site and University leased building space and University-owned vehicles.

Face masks should be worn over the mouth and nose. 

If a minimum of 6 feet of physical distancing is possible, students in their on-campus housing rooms and staff/faculty working in private offices that do not otherwise require face masks/coverings may remove their face masks/coverings while in such spaces. Students working alone in shared office spaces should wear a mask at all times. Students, staff, or faculty working alone in laboratories should wear a mask at all times. If 6 feet of physical distancing is maintained, face masks/coverings may also be removed while eating, and/or while participating in athletic activities.

Student athletes should adhere to guidance from the Athletic Department regarding the use of face masks/coverings during athletic activities.

Appropriate use of face masks/coverings is important to minimize risks to the wearers and those around them. You could spread COVID-19 to others even if you do not feel sick. The use of face masks/covering is not a substitute for physical distancing.

Each faculty member, staff member, and student will be provided with a cloth face covering. Disposable masks will be provided, if needed. You may wear homemade cloth face coverings that adhere to CDC and other public health recommendations. A disposable mask must not be used for more than one day.

Some individuals may not be able to wear a face mask/covering. To request an accommodation: staff members should contact the Office of Human Resources at hr@up.edu, faculty members should contact the Office of the Provost at staten@up.edu, and students should contact Accessible Education Services at aes@up.edu.

If you are experiencing episodes of lightheadedness or shortness of breath, work with your supervisor to identify appropriate times to take breaks and remove your mask during the day.

Types of Face Masks/Coverings

Cloth Face Coverings and Disposable Masks

Cloth face coverings or disposable masks are required for campus community use in all settings (common workspaces, public spaces, hallways, stairwells, elevators, meeting rooms, classrooms, breakrooms, campus outdoor spaces, in restrooms, etc.) They are not required when in private space and physical distancing is possible.

  • Cloth Face Coverings: Home-made or commercially manufactured washable face coverings that have at least two layers and help contain wearer’s respiratory emissions.
  • Disposable Mask: Commercially manufactured masks help contain wearer’s respiratory emissions. Disposable masks should be thrown away after each use.

Medical-Grade Surgical Masks and N95 Respirators

Medical masks and N95s are reserved for healthcare workers and other approved areas with task-specific hazards determined by the COVID-19 Task Forces.

  • Surgical Mask: FDA-approved masks to protect the wearer from large droplets and splashes; helps contains wearer’s respiratory emissions. 
  • N95 Respirator: Provide effective respiratory protection from airborne particles and aerosols; helps contain wearer’s respiratory emissions. 

Masks Not Allowed on Campus

Due to guidance from the OHA and the CDC, bandanas, gaiters, or masks with exhalation valves are not allowed because they allow respiratory emission to escape into the air. 

Use of Disposable Face Masks

Each University of Portland community member will be provided with one cloth face masks to be worn on campus. In the event that you forget your cloth face mask, your department has been given a limited number of disposable face masks. Disposable face masks can be used in lieu of a cloth face covering while on campus. Please see your department administrators to receive a disposable face mask.

Campus visitors and vendors are encouraged to bring their own cloth mask to campus. The University has a supply of disposable face masks for campus visitors in the event they do not have their own. Each department has been issued their own supply of disposable face masks, but in the event that a visitor needs a face mask when arriving on site that the department can’t provide, they may visit Campus Safety in Haggerty Hall to receive a mask.

This policy is subject to change as needed to comply with applicable and emerging guidance from public health officials (local, state and/or federal) and authorized government officials with regard to COVID-19 protocols.
