Residence Life

The University of Portland’s operational resumption plans are subject to change as our understanding of COVID-19 evolves and based on guidelines set by the State of Oregon and Multnomah County. Please check this website often for the latest information.

The University of Portland will modify its on-campus residentiality experience to comply with directives from the Oregon Health Authority and other public health agencies.

Residence Hall Living

  • Residential density in on-campus residence halls is being reduced. While Oregon Health Authority guidance calls for students living together to have at least 64 square feet of space per resident, UP will use rooms that offer students an average of 99.5 square feet.
  • Hall staff will provide regular education and training on all essential health and safety measures.
  • Students will be encouraged to open room windows when possible to maximize air circulation.

Residence Hall Cleaning and Sanitation

  • High-touch areas in residence halls, including restrooms, will be sanitized hourly during peak usage times. Extra cleaning supplies and training will be available for students’ further sanitization.
  • When students are directed to quarantine, there will be enhanced cleaning of nearby common spaces.

Shared/Common Spaces

  • Residence hall common spaces will be reconfigured to maximize physical distancing.
  • Elevators, kitchens, laundry rooms, lounges, study rooms, and restrooms will have maximum capacities.
  • Students will host guests in shared spaces (e.g., lounges), rather than in their private rooms.
  • Where possible, kitchens and laundry rooms will be subject to reservation processes
  • Stairwells will be designated for one-way travel when possible.
  • Each student will have assigned bathroom fixtures (e.g., stalls, sinks, showers, etc.) to reduce the number of student using each fixture.
  • Shared bathrooms will have designated times for quarantined students to shower.
  • Students will use in-room sinks (as opposed to shared bathroom sinks) to brush teeth and wash their face.

Isolation Space

  • Dedicated residential space will be reserved for any students who must be isolated or quarantined.
  • Mini refrigerator/microwave units will be provided in each isolation/quarantine room.
  • Cleaning supplies and linen/towel service will be provided in each isolation/quarantine room.
